Acupuncture Relieves Side Effects of Breast Cancer Treatment

Video Introduction:

This is a great video featuring the use of acupuncture to support women who suffer from hot flashes and other side effects related to cancer treatment. This news story is consistent with our own experience working with cancer patients and it offers powerful testimony from both patients and their doctor about the benefits of acupuncture.

Our Summary and Additional Comments:

Women undergoing treatment for breast cancer are often given anti-estrogen drugs like Tamoxifen or Arimidex. These drugs generate intense hot flashes. To address these hot flashes, physicians prescribe antidepressant drugs like Effexor which carry significant side effects of nausea, decreased sex drive, and fatigue.

A new study presented at the American Society for the Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology's 50th Annual Meeting in Boston found that a 12 week schedule of acupuncture treatment reduced hot flashes as effectively as drugs like Effexor and delivered results that lasted substantially longer. Women in the study also consistently reported increased energy, clarity of thought, sexual desire and an over all sense of well-being. Our patients consistently report the same benefits, and they also report experiencing a significant reduction in stress and anxiety.
